AT&TIf you’re a smartphone user, you’ve probably grumbled at one time or another about the monthly cost of your data plan. “Data” being rather a broad term, you may have wondered what exactly it is that you’re paying for. This easy chart, helpfully provided by the AT&T data calculator, breaks down some of the most common uses of smartphone data and how much data each function eats up for AT&T users.

  • 1 email (text only): 20 KB
  • 1 web page: 1 MB
  • 1 app/game/song download: 4 MB
  • 1 email with photo attachment: 350 KB
  • 1 minute of streaming music: 500 KB
  • Social media download/upload w/photo: 500 KB
  • 1 email with Word, Excel or Powerpoint attachment: 300 KB
  • 1 minute of streaming video (YouTube™ standard quality): 2 MB
  • 1 minute of streaming HD video: 5.1 MB

As you can see, those numbers can add up quickly, but they also cover a lot of ground. Essentially, your data plan is what makes your smartphone smart. Every time you download an app, send an email or watch a video, you’re enjoying the data that powers our mobile world. That may not take all of the sting out of receiving your monthly mobile bill, but at least it lets you know that money is going to good use.
